It comes down to one thing: where the sock ends relative to your shoe.
Ankle socks end just above the shoe line. They sit at or a little above your ankle bone, so you can see a band of sock above your sneaker. That’s the idea.
No-show socks are designed to disappear below the shoe collar. When they fit well, you look barefoot in your trainers. The cuff ends under the top edge of a low-top, so nothing is visible.
Everything else, like pattern, comfort, and fabric, can be the same. The main difference is the cut.
When ankle socks win
Ankle socks are the easygoing all-rounder, and there's a reason they're the default for most people.

The "no socks" look. Loafers, boat shoes, slip-ons, and low-cut summer sneakers all look better when no fabric breaks the line. No-shows give you sock comfort without the sock being visible.
In hot weather, less fabric and less coverage mean cooler feet. When it’s really warm, the minimal cut feels great.

"But do no-shows actually stay up?"
Here’s the honest part: since this is the top complaint about no-show socks. The truth is, a no-show is only as good as its grip and fit. Because the cut sits so low, there’s not much sock holding it to your foot. Two things decide whether it slides down into your shoe:
The right size. A no-show that's slightly too big has nothing to hold onto and will creep down. Size down before you size up.
A heel grip or silicone tab. Many no-shows add a small grip at the heel to keep them put. If yours don't have one and they slip, that's usually the reason.

What "moisture-wicking" actually means
Your feet sweat. A lot, actually. They have more sweat glands per inch than almost anywhere on your body. That sweat has to go somewhere, and a sock has two jobs: pull it off your skin, and let it evaporate.
That's all "wicking" is. It's the fabric moving moisture away from your skin toward the outer surface of the sock, where it has a better chance to dry. A wicking sock doesn't make sweat disappear. It just stops it pooling against your skin, where it would otherwise soften the skin, breed friction, and start the chain that ends in a blister or that cold, clammy feeling on a long day.
The honest headline: a good sock manages moisture. It does not make your feet bone-dry. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling, not explaining.
Why fiber blends matter
This is where the marketing usually goes quiet, so here's the straight version.
Synthetics (nylon, polyamide, polyester) don't really absorb water. They move it. That's why they dry the fastest and why serious long-distance runners and ultralight hikers reach for them.
Merino wool is the clever one: it actually holds a fair bit of moisture inside the fiber while still feeling dry to the touch, and it stays warm when damp. Brilliant for cold, wet, multi-day trips.
Cotton on its own absorbs water and holds onto it. A pure cotton sock soaked in sweat stays wet, which is why "100% cotton" gets a bad name for sport.
But almost no good sock is pure anything. The trick is the blend. Add a synthetic to cotton and you get the soft, breathable feel of cotton with a real assist on moisture movement and strength. That's the whole point of a modern cotton-blend sock, and it's why "cotton can't wick" is a half-truth at best.
Where cotton blends honestly land
A combed-cotton blend won't out-dry a technical synthetic on a wet 30-mile day. We're not going to pretend it does. What a well-built cotton blend does do is breathe, feel soft against the skin, and (thanks to the synthetic in the mix) move enough moisture to stay comfortable through normal use: day hikes, everyday wear, work shifts, gym sessions, shorter runs.

Plenty of brands slap "moisture-wicking" on the label as a yes/no badge. We'd rather you read the fiber mix than trust a badge. A blister forms when a patch of skin gets rubbed back and forth, over and over, until the layers separate and fill with fluid. First, understand the three things that cause a blister
Blisters need three ingredients working together: friction (the sock or boot sliding against skin), moisture (damp skin is softer and tears more easily), and heat (which builds up the longer you go). 4. Cut the friction directly
Two old-school tricks that work:
- Lubricant or anti-chafe balm on known hot spots (heels, little toes) before you set off. It lets surfaces glide instead of grip.
- Tape or a blister patch on a hot spot the moment you feel it, not after it's a blister. A hot spot is the warning; stopping for two minutes there saves the rest of your day.
5. Sort the boots and the feet
Socks can't fix a boot that doesn't fit. Make sure there's no heel lift, lace properly to lock the heel down, and break boots in before the big walk. Keep toenails trimmed, and if you're prone to blisters in one spot, pre-tape it as routine.

We're not going to pretend otherwise. If your running is long-distance, fast, hot, or wet, a technical synthetic running sock is the right tool:
It dries quickest and recovers fastest after a sweat-soak or a puddle.
It's the standard choice for marathoners, ultra runners, and trail racers who are out for hours.
It handles repeated heavy mileage where moisture has the most time to build up.
